Our History

In 2006, a small group of leaders representing Forest Hill Church, NeXus Ministries, and Warehouse 242 traveled to Atlanta to visit FCS Urban Ministries.

The team studied the work of Dr. Bob Lupton and his passion for empowering the poor through community development. One of the stops on the visit was a thrift shop, operated by residents of one of Atlanta's poorest neighborhoods.

The team was struck by the dignity of the employees that operated the thrift shop. Upon arriving back in Charlotte, the team began exploring what could be done to respond to the insights gained on the visit to FCS. They read Dr. Lupton's book, "And You Call Yourself a Christian," (now titled, "Compassion, Justice and the Christian Life: Rethinking Ministry to the Poor," available on Amazon), and then re-read the inspiring Chapter 7. The team agreed that a practical next step would be to create a toy store to empower and develop at-risk urban communities in Charlotte. The Christmas Village Toy Store was born…
